High Prescription Drug Costs Are Tough to Swallow

May 2020

According to a survey on prescription drug costs, over half of patients don’t take their prescribed medication, don’t take the proper dosage or skip doses simply because their prescriptions are too expensive.1 As a UC PPO plan member, you have resources to price your medications based on current data so that you understand what your out-of-pocket costs will be.

Meet the Anthem “Price a Medication” tool. You can access the tool through the Anthem member portal. Once you’re logged in:

  • Under the “My Plan” option, click “Pharmacy.” Then click on the “Price a Medication” link and enter the name of the medication.
  • Compare costs at nearby pharmacies. Not all pharmacies charge the same price for the same drug. See what you’ll pay, depending on your pharmacy preference.
  • See home delivery pricing. IngenioRx Home Delivery Pharmacy blends convenience with potential savings. If applicable for your medication, get home delivery of up to a 90-day supply of medications you take regularly. It’s a convenient way to avoid a trip to the pharmacy and to get your prescriptions. Standard shipping is free, and you can even set up automatic refills and renewals.
  • View alternatives. The pricing tool also lists cheaper alternatives to your medication, such as the generic version, if available. Research other options and discuss alternatives with your doctor to determine if any are an option for you.

You can also access the “Price a Medication” tool from the free UC Vita (Engage Wellbeing) mobile app. Once you’ve logged in, just enter the medication name in the search bar. Haven’t downloaded the app yet? Search for the Engage Wellbeing app on the App Store or Google Play.
